For the first time in its history the GDCh "August Wilhelm von Hofmann Denkmünze", a medal of gold, has been awarded to a scientist from the Asian continent. In Nürnberg C.N.R. Rao, professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, India, will receive this award, which the GDCh has created to recognize foreign outstanding scientists. C.N.R. Rao was selected prize winner in 2010 for his outstanding work in the field of inorganic solid state chemistry, especially for his pioneering work on transition metal oxides with magnetoresistive properties, furthermore for his achievements in establishing top-class research in India as well as for his merits as President of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.

To raise the profile of sustainable chemistry and be a spur to innovation and competitiveness,  EuCheMS has launched The European Sustainable Chemistry Award. With the encouragement of the European Environment Agency (EEA), the support of SusChem (European Platform for Sustainable Chemistry) and CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Association) and under the patronage of Nobel Laureates Gerhard Ertl and Jean-Marie Lehn,  the first European Sustainable Chemistry Award, a prize of €10,000, will be presented during the 3rd EuCheMS Chemistry Congress. For more information see http://www.euchems.org/ESCA/index.asp

Monday, 30.08.2010, 10.00 - 12.00 hrs, CCN West, Saal London

The Reaxys PhD Prize will be awarded for original and innovative research in organic, organometallic and inorganic chemistry, which demonstrates excellence in methodology and approach by a candidate currently studying for a PhD or having completed a PhD within the last 12 months. Three prize winners will each receive a check for $ 2000 and be invited to present their research at the Winners’ Symposium to be held at the 3rd EuCheMS Chemistry Congress 2010 meeting in Nuremburg. The 2010 Heinrich Emanuel Merck Award for Analytical Sciences will go to Luisa Torsi, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Bari in Italy.
This marks the first time that the renowned award has been given to a woman and to a scientist in Italy. With a fund of 15.000 euros, the Heinrich Emanuel Merck Award stands for excellence in analytical chemistry for more than 20 years. The award is given to honoured scientists under the age of 45 whose work focuses on new methods in chemical analysis and the deployment thereof in applications aimed at improving the quality of human life, for example in fields such as environmental protection, life sciences or the biosciences.
Luisa Torsi is being recognized for her research work on organic semiconducting chemical sensors based on organic thin-film field effect transistors. Such components permit highly sensitive analytical measurements. This highly interesting technology makes it possible to measure so-called chiral substances, meaning the spatial arrangement of atoms in molecules. Chiral substances are responsible for many biological effects in enzymes, antibodies or other molecular receptors. This in turn yields numerous applications in the synthesis of raw materials and active ingredients in Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals.

Meet Professor Torsi for questions and answers on the Merck booth, Monday 12.00 hrs - 13.00 hrs

Wednesday, 01.09.2010, 10.00 - 16.00 hrs, CCN West, Saal London
